Serious injury, death, and property damage are possible

Garage doors can fall or move unexpectedly. Springs, lift cables, pulleys, drums, and attached brackets can be under high tension even when electrical power is disconnected. Electrical components can shock or burn. Do not stand, reach, or pass beneath a moving or partly open door. Keep children, pets, and bystanders clear.

General information only

This guide helps you describe symptoms and identify possible areas for inspection. It is not an onsite inspection, confirmed diagnosis, repair manual, engineering assessment, emergency response, or certification of safe operation. It cannot examine your equipment, verify your answers, identify every hazard, or account for every installation. Example photos do not establish your spring type, safe condition, or correct replacement part. A report that the door works again is not proof that its safety systems work.

Stop when there is damage or uncertainty

Do not continue operating a crooked, off-track, stuck, unusually heavy, straining, or damaged door, or one with a suspected spring or cable failure. Do not pull its emergency release or try to test its weight. Never adjust, loosen, remove, or repair tension-loaded parts using this guide. Do not open the opener housing, touch wiring terminals, increase force settings to overcome resistance, or disable safety devices. Leave repairs and adjustments to trained professionals. If anyone is trapped or there is an immediate threat to life, call 911.

Optional checks and manufacturer instructions

Only an adult authorized to operate the equipment should consider a check. Use your exact door and opener model’s current instructions. Skip a check if the model, condition, instructions, or safe access are uncertain. A wall-button hold may override the sensor-eye stop function on supported models; it is not a repair and must never be relied on for normal use. Do not attempt it unless every safety condition in the guide and the model manual is met, with the entire opening continuously clear and visible.
